During most of its history it was housed, with a Barristers Lounge, in a series of connected rooms at the old Courthouse at 2 Daly Avenue beside the old Ottawa Jail (now a Youth Hostel). The first library staff person was hired in 1889 at a salary of $0.75 per hour and the original four oak tables and nine wooden chairs remained in the library for over 100 years. The library moved to its present location at the new Ottawa Courthouse in November 1986 and was the first and only occupant of the building for some time, pending safety approval by the Fire Chief.
