Serves: The library serves over 800 lawyers, articling students and courthouse officials in London and Middlesex County.
Services: Librarian-assisted reference and research plus photocopying, printing, faxing, electronic document delivery and wireless access. Lawyers also have access to the free interlibrary loan service provided by all the association law libraries.
Circulation Policy: Members may borrow texts for 2 days and law reports for 24 hours. Other items may be borrowed at the librarians’ discretion.
Special Collections: The library has legislation for almost all Canadian jurisdictions dating back to Confederation as well as an extensive collection of materials relevant to the practice of law in Ontario. Middlesex also houses a large historical British case law and legislation collection.
History: The Middlesex Law Association was established in 1879 and found its first home in the picturesque county courthouse and jail whose architecture was modeled after the original Castle Malahide in Dublin, complete with turrets and parapets. The MLA has been in the current courthouse since it opened in 1974 and, after 32 years on the 6th floor, moved within the building to the ground floor in 2006.
Computer User Workstations: The library computer area consists of six computer workstations and the entire library and lounge space has wireless internet access.
Facility: The Association moved into its new suite on the ground floor of the Courthouse at the end of 2006. It is one of the largest county courthouse libraries in terms of floor space and its collection is the third largest in the province. The MLA suite houses the library along with new locker rooms and lawyers lounge space. Lockers for visiting lawyers are available for day use.
Accessibility: The library, lawyers’ lounge and locker room space is fully accessible as per courthouse standards.
